The Holy Spirit Is God — The Third Person of the Trinity

Muslims typically identify the Holy Spirit with the angel Gabriel. Others deny personhood to the Spirit entirely, treating it as an impersonal divine force. This section establishes from the NT that the Holy Spirit is: (1) a distinct person, not an impersonal force, (2) identified as God himself in the NT, and (3) the third member of the divine Triunity — not an angel.
The Holy Spirit Is a PERSON — Not a Force
Personal Attributes the Holy Spirit Receives — Only Persons Receive These
1 — The Spirit can be LIED TO (Acts 5:3-4):
"But Peter said, 'Ananias, why has Satan filled your heart to lie to the Holy Spirit... You have not lied to man but to God.'"
Peter equates lying to the Holy Spirit with lying to God — in the same sentence. And you cannot lie to an impersonal force. Lying requires a person who can be deceived. The Spirit is a person who can receive deception — and is identified directly as "God."

2 — The Spirit can be GRIEVED (Ephesians 4:30):
"And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption."
Grief is an emotional response of a person. You cannot grieve electricity, or gravity, or a divine force. You can grieve a person who has feelings.

3 — The Spirit can be BLASPHEMED (Matthew 12:31-32):
"Therefore I tell you, every sin and blasphemy will be forgiven people, but the blasphemy against the Spirit will not be forgiven."
Blasphemy is directed against a person. You can blaspheme God or a king — you cannot blaspheme an impersonal force. The severity of blaspheming the Spirit (unforgiven sin) implies the Spirit holds a position even higher in some sense than the Son — and is certainly a person.

4 — The Spirit SPEAKS and SAYS (Acts 13:2, 28:25):
"The Holy Spirit said, 'Set apart for me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them.'"
"The Holy Spirit was right in saying to your fathers through Isaiah the prophet..."
The Spirit uses first-person language ("called THEM to ME"). The Spirit authors OT prophecy. These are person-level activities.

5 — The Spirit INTERCEDES with "groanings too deep for words" (Romans 8:26-27):
"Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness. For we do not know what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words. And he who searches hearts knows what is the mind of the Spirit."
Intercession requires personal will, personal relationship, and personal communication. "Groanings too deep for words" implies emotional depth — a person praying on behalf of believers.
The Holy Spirit IS God — Direct Identifications
Acts 5:3-4 — The Most Explicit Identification of Spirit as God
The text in full:
"But Peter said, 'Ananias, why has Satan filled your heart to lie to the Holy Spirit and to keep back for yourself part of the proceeds of the land? While it remained unsold, did it not remain your own? And after it was sold, was it not at your disposal? Why is it that you have contrived this deed in your heart? You have not lied to man but to God.'"

The structure:
Statement 1: "You lied to the Holy Spirit"
Statement 2: "You lied to... God"
Peter uses these as identical statements in the same verse. Lying to the Holy Spirit = lying to God. The Holy Spirit IS God. This is the most direct equation of the Spirit with God in the entire NT — and it is made by Peter, not a theologian writing centuries later.
1 Corinthians 2:10-11 — The Spirit Has God's Own Omniscience
The text:
"These things God has revealed to us through the Spirit. For the Spirit searches everything, even the depths of God. For who knows a person's thoughts except the spirit of that person, which is in him? So also no one comprehends the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God."

The theological argument:
Paul draws an analogy: just as only your own spirit knows your own innermost thoughts, only the Spirit of God can know God's innermost thoughts — "the depths of God." This means the Holy Spirit has intrinsic access to God's own inner being — not because the Spirit was told about it, but because the Spirit IS the inner being of God. An angel cannot know the depths of God — angels are external to God. Only someone who shares God's own nature can have intrinsic access to God's own depths. The Spirit has omniscient access to God's own being because the Spirit IS divine in nature.
Matthew 28:19 — One NAME (Singular) for Three Persons
The text:
"Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name (onoma — singular) of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit."

The grammar is decisive:
Jesus says "name" (onoma) — singular. Not "names" (onomata) — plural. Three persons share ONE name. If the Holy Spirit were an angel or a lesser being, the command would be: "baptize in the name of the Father and the Son, and also in the name of [the angel] Gabriel." But the three persons share one singular divine name — because they share one divine identity. The Trinity is not three names — it is one name for three persons.

The formula itself proves the Spirit's divine status:
The Father and Son are universally recognized by Muslims as having divine status (at minimum as creator and divine Word). They are placed in parallel with the Holy Spirit under one name. This parallelism places the Spirit in the same divine category as the Father and Son.
John 14:16-17,26 — The Spirit Is Not Gabriel
The Muslim claim:
The Holy Spirit is the angel Gabriel who brought revelation to Jesus and to Muhammad.

Why this fails against John 14:
John 14:16-17: "And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper (Paraklētos), to be with you forever, even the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, for he dwells WITH YOU and will be IN YOU."

(1) "Another Helper (allos Paraklētos)" — allos means another of the SAME KIND. Jesus is the first Paraklētos (1 John 2:1 — Jesus is our advocate/paraklētos with the Father). The Spirit is another Paraklētos of the same divine kind as Jesus.
(2) "To be with you FOREVER" — Gabriel appears for specific missions and leaves. The Spirit dwells permanently, forever, in believers. Gabriel is not permanently inside Christians.
(3) "He dwells WITH YOU and will be IN YOU" — internal indwelling in believers. Gabriel is never described as dwelling inside believers. The Spirit's personal indwelling is the defining mark of the Christian life (Romans 8:9: "If anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to him").
(4) John 14:26: "But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name..." — Jesus himself identifies the Paraklētos as the Holy Spirit, not Gabriel.
💡 The Holy Spirit Is God — Complete Response"Five lines of NT evidence prove the Holy Spirit is a divine person: (1) Acts 5:3-4 — Peter equates lying to the Holy Spirit with lying to God in the same sentence. This is the most direct NT identification of the Spirit as God. (2) 1 Corinthians 2:10-11 — The Spirit has intrinsic access to 'the depths of God' because the Spirit shares God's own nature — an angel cannot know God's innermost being from the inside. (3) Matthew 28:19 — baptism into one NAME (singular) of Father, Son, and Holy Spirit — three persons sharing one divine name. (4) The Spirit receives activities that only persons receive: can be lied to (Acts 5:3), grieved (Ephesians 4:30), blasphemed with unforgiven sin (Matthew 12:31), and intercedes with personal prayer (Romans 8:26-27). (5) John 14:16-17 refutes the Gabriel identification: the Spirit will be with believers 'forever' (Gabriel is not permanent), will dwell 'in' believers (Gabriel does not indwell), is 'another of the same kind' as Jesus (allos — same divine kind). The Quran's identification of the Holy Spirit with Gabriel cannot account for any of these five points — Gabriel does not dwell inside Christians forever, cannot be lied to, cannot be grieved, and is not omniscient about God's own depths."
