Islam and Violence — What the Quran, Hadith and Islamic Law Actually Say
Many Muslims and Western commentators claim that Islam is a religion of peace and that violent Quranic verses are misquoted out of context. This section examines what classical Islamic scholarship — not Western critics — actually says about these texts, using Ibn Kathir, al-Tabari, al-Suyuti, and the four major Sunni law schools.
Surah 9 — The Last Major Revelation and Why It Matters
Surah 9 Is the Last Major Chapter Revealed — Its Commands Are Final
Islamic scholars agree that Surah 9 (Al-Tawbah) is one of the last major chapters revealed to Muhammad — approximately 9 AH (630-631 AD), the year before his death. This is significant because in Islamic jurisprudence, later revelations abrogate earlier ones when there is contradiction (Surah 2:106: "We do not abrogate a verse or cause it to be forgotten except that We bring forth one better than it").
Classical scholar al-Suyuti (al-Itqan) listed Surah 9:5 as abrogating approximately 124 earlier peaceful verses — including the famous "There is no compulsion in religion" (Surah 2:256) which many Muslims cite as Islam's peace verse. Al-Suyuti's own words: "The verse of the sword abrogated every covenant of peace and every treaty that had been established with the polytheists."
This means the question is not whether peaceful verses exist in the Quran — they do. The question is which verses are final and authoritative under Islamic abrogation doctrine. Classical Islamic scholarship answers: Surah 9 contains the final word.

Surah 9:5 — What Classical Scholars Say It Means
The text:
"And when the sacred months have passed, kill the polytheists (mushrikeen) wherever you find them, and capture them and besiege them and sit in wait for them at every place of ambush. But if they repent, establish prayer, and give zakah, let them [go]."
Ibn Kathir's commentary (Tafsir, on Surah 9:5):
"Allah said... 'kill the Mushrikeen wherever you find them', meaning wherever you find them on the earth, kill them... Allah said: 'and capture them', meaning put the polytheists in iron shackles when you have the ability to do so; 'and besiege them', meaning in fortresses, castles and walled cities; 'and wait for them at every ambush', watch the roads and paths for them."
The Encyclopaedia of the Quran (academic, not Muslim apologist):
"On the basis of the 'sword verse' (Q 9:5)... it is clear that the purpose of fighting the idolaters is to convert them to Islam... Many commentators interpret Q 2:193 and 8:39... as an instruction to convert all the polytheists to Islam by force if need be."
The Muslim "defensive jihad only" response:
Many modern Muslims say these verses only apply to defensive warfare — you can only fight those who attack you first. This is a legitimate position within Islamic jurisprudence (the Hanafi school leans this direction). However, it is not the classical mainstream position. Ibn Kathir, al-Tabari, and the majority of classical scholars read Surah 9:5 as justifying offensive warfare to extend Islamic governance.

Surah 9:29 — Fight Christians and Jews Until They Pay Jizya
The text:
"Fight those who do not believe in Allah or in the Last Day and who do not consider unlawful what Allah and His Messenger have made unlawful and who do not adopt the religion of truth from those who were given the Scripture — until they give the jizya willingly while they are humbled (wa hum saghirun — while they are in a state of abasement)."
Ibn Kathir on 9:29:
"The Order to fight People of the Scriptures until they give the Jizyah... Allah commanded His Messenger to fight the People of the Scriptures, Jews and Christians, on the ninth year of Hijrah, and he prepared his army to fight the Romans... Paying Jizyah is a Sign of Kufr and Disgrace... al-Suddi said, 'They are degraded and humiliated.'"
The three options for non-Muslims under classical Islamic governance:
(1) Convert to Islam
(2) Pay the jizya (discriminatory tax) and live as dhimmis — second-class subjects with legal restrictions
(3) Be fought
The dhimmi restrictions under classical Islamic law (documented from the Pact of Umar):
— Cannot build new churches or repair damaged ones
— Cannot ring church bells
— Cannot display crosses or Bibles publicly
— Must wear distinctive clothing identifying as non-Muslim
— Cannot ride horses (only donkeys)
— Must stand when Muslims enter a room
— Cannot hold authority over Muslims
Contrast with Jesus (Matthew 22:21):
"Render to Caesar the things that are Caesar's." Jesus paid taxes to Rome — a pagan occupying empire — without requiring Romans to convert, pay discrimination taxes, or live as second-class subjects. The Gospel never advocates the political subjugation of non-believers.

Kill Those Who Change Their Religion — The Hadith Record
Sahih Bukhari 9:84:57:
"Narrated Ikrima: Ali burnt some people and this news reached Ibn Abbas, who said, 'Had I been in his place, I would not have burnt them, as Allah's Apostle forbade it... I would have killed them according to the statement of Allah's Apostle: Whoever changed his Islamic religion, kill him.'"
Sahih Bukhari 4:52:260:
"A man embraced Islam and then reverted back to Judaism. Mu'adh bin Jabal came and saw the man with Abu Musa and asked, 'What is wrong with this man?' Abu Musa replied, 'He embraced Islam and then reverted back to Judaism.' Mu'adh said, 'I will not sit down unless you kill him (and implement) the verdict of Allah and His Apostle.'"
Sahih Abu Dawud 3:4345:
"Narrated Abdullah ibn Abbas: 'A blind man had a slave-mother who used to abuse the Prophet and disparage him. He forbade her but she did not stop. He rebuked her but she did not give up her habit. One night she began to slander the Prophet and abuse him. So he took a dagger, placed it on her belly, pressed it, and killed her.'"
Muhammad's response: he said the man had done nothing for which retaliation was warranted, for blood had been shed for the sake of the Prophet.
The four Sunni law schools on apostasy:
All four major Sunni law schools (Hanafi, Maliki, Shafi'i, Hanbali) consider apostasy a capital offense. The death penalty for apostasy is not the invention of "extremists" — it is the classical, mainstream, scholarly consensus of Sunni jurisprudence for 1,400 years.
Contrast with Jesus (John 8:11):
When a woman was brought to Jesus for execution under the law, he said: "Neither do I condemn you; go and sin no more." Jesus called people to follow him freely — never under threat of death for leaving.

💡 Islam and Violence — The Summary Response"This is not about misquoting the Quran — it is about what classical Islamic scholarship says about these verses. Surah 9:5 ('kill the polytheists wherever you find them'): Ibn Kathir's commentary says this means finding them on the earth, killing them, putting them in iron shackles, besieging their cities. Al-Suyuti says this verse abrogates approximately 124 earlier peaceful verses including 'There is no compulsion in religion' (2:256). Surah 9:29 gives Christians and Jews three options: convert, pay jizya in humiliation ('wa hum saghirun'), or be fought. Ibn Kathir calls the jizya 'a sign of kufr and disgrace.' The dhimmi system under classical Islamic law gave non-Muslims second-class status: no new churches, distinctive clothing, cannot ride horses. The death penalty for apostasy is from Sahih Bukhari (9:84:57: 'Whoever changed his Islamic religion, kill him') and is the consensus of all four major Sunni law schools. Jesus: 'Love your enemies' (Matthew 5:44), 'Neither do I condemn you' (John 8:11). Muhammad: ordered assassinations of poets who criticized him, commanded war against Christians and Jews until they submit, established the death penalty for leaving Islam. The contrast is not between systems — it is between two specific men and what they actually said and did."
