People of the Book — What the Quran Says About Christians and Jews
The Quran's attitude toward Christians and Jews (People of the Book) is more complex and internally contradictory than most Muslims or non-Muslims realize. Some verses express respect and closeness; others command hostility. Understanding this complexity is essential for Christian-Muslim dialogue — and for understanding what the Quran actually teaches about followers of Jesus.
The Positive Texts — Where the Quran Praises Christians
Surah 5:82 — Christians Are Closest in Love to Muslims
The text:
"You will surely find the most intense of the people in animosity toward the believers [to be] the Jews and those who associate others with Allah; and you will find the nearest of them in affection to the believers those who say, 'We are Christians.' That is because among them are priests and monks and because they are not arrogant."
What this verse says:
The Quran explicitly states that Christians are the CLOSEST in love and affection to Muslims — closer than anyone else. The reason given: Christians have priests and monks (people of prayer and devotion) and they are not arrogant. This is one of the most positive statements about Christians in any non-Christian religious text.
The implication for Christian-Muslim dialogue:
When a Muslim says "the Quran teaches that Christians are enemies of Islam" — you can cite Surah 5:82 as a counter. The Quran itself says Christians are the closest to Muslims in love. This opens the door: if Christians are closest in love, and if Christians believe Jesus is God — what does the Quran's own positive assessment of Christians say about the possibility that the Christian Jesus is the true Jesus?
Surah 3:113-114 — Among the People of the Book Are Righteous Ones:
"They are not [all] the same; among the People of the Scripture is a community standing [in obedience], reciting the verses of Allah during periods of the night and prostrating [in prayer]. They believe in Allah and the Last Day, and they enjoin what is right and forbid what is wrong and hasten to good deeds. And those are among the righteous."
The Quran affirms that among Jews and Christians there are genuinely righteous people — not all are misguided.

Surah 5:51:
"O you who have believed, do not take the Jews and the Christians as allies (awliya). They are [in fact] allies of one another. And whoever is an ally to them among you — then indeed, he is [one] of them."
Surah 9:29:
"Fight those who do not believe in Allah or in the Last Day and who do not consider unlawful what Allah and His Messenger have made unlawful and who do not adopt the religion of truth from those who were given the Scripture — until they give the jizyah willingly while they are humbled."
Surah 9:30:
"The Jews say, 'Ezra is the son of Allah'; and the Christians say, 'The Messiah is the son of Allah.' That is their statement from their mouths; they imitate the saying of those who disbelieved [before them]. May Allah destroy them; how are they deluded?"
The internal Quranic tension:
Surah 5:82: Christians are the CLOSEST in love to Muslims
Surah 5:51: Do NOT take Christians as allies (awliya)
Surah 9:30: May Allah DESTROY the Christians for saying Christ is the Son of God
These cannot all be simultaneously true. The resolution in classical Islamic scholarship is abrogation: Surah 9 (revealed late) abrogates the friendlier earlier verses. If abrogation applies, the final Quranic position on Christians is the hostile one — Surah 9:29 (fight them until they pay jizyah and are humbled) and 9:30 (may Allah destroy them for believing in the Son of God).

The Quran on What Christians Believe — The Strawman Problem
Surah 5:116 — The Trinity Misunderstood:
"And [beware the Day] when Allah will say, 'O Jesus, Son of Mary, did you say to the people, "Take me and my mother as deities besides Allah"?'"
The theological error:
The Quran portrays the Christian Trinity as: Allah, Jesus, and Mary. No Christian tradition has ever included Mary in the Trinity. The Trinity is Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. When the Quran's Jesus denies telling people to worship him and his mother as two gods alongside Allah — he is denying a heresy that no orthodox Christian holds.
The Collyridian heresy connection:
Some historians have identified the Collyridian sect — a group that apparently worshipped Mary as a goddess — as possibly known in Arabia in Muhammad's time. If Muhammad's knowledge of Christianity came through Arabian popular religion (which may have included Marian devotion beyond what orthodox Christianity taught), this could explain the Quranic misrepresentation of the Trinity.
The apologetic implication:
The Quran's Jesus denies a Trinity that Christians also deny. The Quran attacks a strawman. When you show a Muslim the actual Trinitarian formula (Father, Son, Holy Spirit — not Father, Jesus, Mary), the Quran's argument against the Trinity simply does not apply to what Christians actually believe.
"And [beware the Day] when Allah will say, 'O Jesus, Son of Mary, did you say to the people, "Take me and my mother as deities besides Allah"?'"
The theological error:
The Quran portrays the Christian Trinity as: Allah, Jesus, and Mary. No Christian tradition has ever included Mary in the Trinity. The Trinity is Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. When the Quran's Jesus denies telling people to worship him and his mother as two gods alongside Allah — he is denying a heresy that no orthodox Christian holds.
The Collyridian heresy connection:
