The Tahrif Dilemma — The Quran Cannot Claim Bible Corruption

When Muslims cannot answer a biblical argument, they often retreat to "the Bible has been corrupted (tahrif)." This section shows that the Quran itself actively contradicts the tahrif claim — and that the manuscript evidence makes textual corruption of the Bible impossible to maintain.
The Quran Affirms the Bible's Integrity
The Quran's Own Testimony — The Bible Was Valid in Muhammad's Day
Surah 3:3:
"He has sent down upon you the Book in truth, confirming what came before it. And he revealed the Torah and the Gospel before, as guidance for the people."

The Quran says the Torah and Gospel were valid guidance for people — present tense in Muhammad's 7th-century context.

Surah 5:47:
"Let the People of the Gospel judge by what Allah has revealed therein. And whoever does not judge by what Allah has revealed — then it is those who are the defiantly disobedient."

The Quran commands Christians to judge by the Gospel. If the Gospel was corrupted, this command would be meaningless or dangerous — commanding people to judge by a corrupted text.

Surah 5:68:
"Say, 'O People of the Scripture, you are [standing] on nothing until you uphold [the law of] the Torah, the Gospel, and what has been revealed to you from your Lord.'"

Again — the Quran commands Jews and Christians to uphold their scriptures. If those scriptures were corrupted, this command would lead people astray.

Surah 10:94 — directed to Muhammad himself:
"So if you are in doubt, [O Muhammad], about that which We have revealed to you, then ask those who have been reading the Scripture before you."

Muhammad is told: if you doubt the Quran, ask the People of Scripture (Jews and Christians) who read their books. If those books were corrupted, this would be catastrophically dangerous advice — telling Muhammad to verify divine revelation with corrupted texts.
The Logical Self-Destruction of the Tahrif Claim
The Muslim argument:
"The Bible has been corrupted (tahrif al-lafdhi — textual corruption) to remove Muhammad's name and change the message."

Problem 1 — The Quran says God's words cannot be changed:
Surah 6:114-115: "The word of your Lord is fulfilled in truth and in justice. None can change His words."
Surah 10:64: "No change is there in the words of Allah."
Surah 18:27: "And recite what has been revealed to you of the Book of your Lord. There is no changer of His words."

The Quran explicitly states that Allah's words cannot be changed. If the Torah and Gospel are Allah's words (Surah 3:3 says they are), then they cannot be corrupted. If they CAN be corrupted, then Allah failed to protect his own words — contradicting Surah 6:115 and 18:27.

Problem 2 — When was the corruption supposed to happen?
The Dead Sea Scrolls (discovered 1947, copied ~100 BC) contain Isaiah 53 and other key passages in virtually identical form to our current OT. Our OT was not corrupted between 100 BC and the Dead Sea Scrolls — and there are Jewish copies predating Muhammad. The Codex Sinaiticus (~350 AD) and Codex Vaticanus (~325 AD) contain the NT in virtually identical form to our current NT — both predating Muhammad by 250+ years. There is no manuscript evidence for a pre-Islamic version of the Bible that named Muhammad.

Problem 3 — Who did the corrupting?
For the Bible to be corrupted globally to remove Muhammad's name, someone would need to have: (a) identified every copy of every OT and NT manuscript in every language in every country, (b) coordinated a global conspiracy to change all of them simultaneously, (c) done this without any historical record of the conspiracy, and (d) convinced both Jews and Christians — who hated each other and would never cooperate — to change their texts together. This is historically impossible.

Problem 4 — The Quran uses the Bible without noting corruption:
The Quran quotes or refers to Torah and Gospel stories throughout — Moses, Abraham, David, Solomon, Jesus, Mary. It never says "the Torah says X but this is corrupted — the real version says Y." It quotes these texts as if they are reliable.
The Manuscript Evidence — Textual Corruption Is Historically Impossible
OT manuscript evidence:
— Dead Sea Scrolls (~100 BC – 70 AD): contain substantial portions of the OT, including the complete Isaiah scroll. Comparison with current Hebrew OT shows remarkable fidelity — confirming the OT was preserved accurately for over 2,000 years before our oldest complete medieval manuscripts.
— The Isaiah 53 scroll at Qumran: virtually identical to current Hebrew MT Isaiah 53 — 100 years before Jesus, 700 years before Muhammad. Already in this form before Christianity and 700 years before Islam.

NT manuscript evidence:
— 5,700+ Greek NT manuscripts
— Rylands Papyrus P52 (~125 AD): the oldest NT fragment, containing John 18
— Papyrus P66 (~175-200 AD) and P75 (~175-225 AD): major papyri of John's Gospel
— Codex Sinaiticus and Vaticanus (~325-350 AD): nearly complete NT
— Additionally: 10,000+ Latin manuscripts, 9,300+ other language manuscripts

These manuscripts span multiple centuries, multiple countries, and multiple language traditions — all showing a consistent NT without any pre-Islamic version naming Muhammad. The textual tradition of the NT is better documented than any other ancient text in history.

Comparing textual witness:
The NT has 25,000+ manuscripts. The next best-attested ancient text is the Iliad with ~2,000 manuscripts. No scholar of ancient texts doubts we have reliable access to what the NT originally said — based on manuscript evidence alone. The Muslim tahrif claim requires dismissing the most thoroughly attested ancient textual tradition in history.
💡 The Tahrif Response — Complete"The Quran itself destroys the tahrif (Bible corruption) claim: Surah 6:115 says 'None can change His words' — if the Torah and Gospel are Allah's words (Surah 3:3 says they are), they cannot be corrupted. Surah 5:47 commands Christians to judge by the Gospel — if it was corrupted, this command would be catastrophically misleading. Surah 10:94 tells Muhammad himself to ask Jews and Christians who read their scriptures if he is in doubt — impossible advice if those scriptures were corrupted. The Dead Sea Scrolls (~100 BC) contain Isaiah 53 in virtually the same form as our current OT — 700 years before Muhammad. The NT is attested by 5,700+ Greek manuscripts plus 10,000+ in other languages, including copies from 125-225 AD (pre-Islam by 400+ years). There is zero manuscript evidence of a pre-Islamic Bible version naming Muhammad. The global coordination required to corrupt every copy in every language in every country simultaneously, without historical record, is historically impossible. The tahrif claim is not supported by the Quran, not supported by manuscripts, and not logically coherent."
